Erza and Jellal Relationship

Erza and Jellal have a complex relationship. They were friends in their days of slavery. During those times, Erza looked up to his sense of justice and courage. Jellal cared for her to the point of going to the dungeons by himself to save her. However, when Jellal was brainwashed by Ultear (the so-called "Spirit of Zeref"), he became a totally different person and exiled Erza from the Tower of Heaven, making everyone believe that Erza had betrayed them. Erza and Jellal fought later at the Tower of Heaven. When Jellal almost sacrificed her to "revive" Zeref, he claimed that he loved her and forcefully pushed her towards the R-system crystal. Fortunately, Natsu saved her. In spite of everything, Erza seems to have feelings for Jellal since she knew Jellal might be the one responsible for saving everyone from the tower's explosion. Erza also discovered that Jellal was still alive and ran off to look for him, but when she finds him, she realized he had lost his memories. After the defeat of the Oracion Seis, the Council Army arrives to take Jellal and Hoteye away. Erza is seen trembling when everyone fought for Jellal's freedom, though she understands his feelings and lets the Council Army take him away. Jellal then mentions her last name "Scarlet" before he left. Later, Erza was seen crying alone over the loss of Jellal, remembering when he gave her her last name after the color of her hair, so that he would never forget during their days of slavery. Jellal had said back then "It's the color of your hair. That way, I'll never forget it." The sky then appeared in a deep scarlet color as she dwelled within her memories of him.

Jellal is later seen in one of the Council's prison cell, when Erza is at the brink of defeat by Azuma on Tenrou Island, he whispers Erza's name to himself, seemingly somehow aware of the event.^[200] When one of the guards hears Jellal muttering, he respectfully calls him by his former name, the other one, Nadal, scolds him, telling him that Jellal is the one who destroyed the old council. When the first guard wonders whether Jellal was casting a spell, Nadal replies that the cell was built with magic sealing stone, preventing the one inside from using Magic. To test this, he starts to torture Jellal for a bit with his Magic staff, wondering if Jellal is hungry and stating that he'll only give him food if he begs, otherwise, he'll leave Jellal without food for an entire week. Jellal ignores him, and instead asks Erza not to lose, something which shocks both guards. Erza was somehow able to feel his voice, and this granted her enough strength to stand back on her feet and continue the fight, with some flashbacks of him appearing before her.^[201][202] When Erza finally manages to defeat Azuma, Jellal is seen sensing that and smiling.^[203]
